MINDY MENG WANG 王萌 AND TIM SHIEL BODY OF WATER (WHAT IS LOVE) 一线之间

Following from the release of their acclaimed debut collaborative EP, Nervous Energy 一 触即发, Chinese/Australian avant-garde composer Mindy Meng Wang 王萌 and her Melbourne-based contemporary Tim Shiel share a new single 'Body of Water (What Is Love) 一线之间'. The song is inspired by a jungle breakbeat and 60s and 70s film soundtracks whilst echoing the ambient electronica of Boards of Canada, using escalating synthesisers, smooth bass, and dreamy guitar against a rhythmic backdrop. The fluidity of the instrumentation is mirrored in the music video which captures beach shots from a drone. From both the song and the video, there's a sense of grandeur; which the observer is invited to sit back and witness as it unfolds. Says Tim Shiel on the video, "A while ago my friend Finn shared some videos that he had taken of his family down the beach'...'Something about it seemed to resonate with Body of Water - even beyond the most obvious thing of the song's title - there is something about lingering over these natural formations of water, rock, sand, that have existed for thousands of years and will for thousands more, that felt like a great fit for the kind of ancient power of the guzheng." 'Body of Water (What Is Love) 一线之间' is out now on Music in Exile. Watch and listen here. -Ellie Rose-Davies
